Rain lakes are water-retention bodies that slow down or prevent stormwater runoff into watercourses. These lakes capture water falling on both paved and unpaved surfaces, such as roofs. They also retain water coming from drainage outlets, ground seepage, and springs. Through evaporation, they support the microclimate and, depending on their design, can moisten the surrounding soil and help prevent the landscape from drying out. Supplementing these lakes from wells or boreholes is not desirable, so that valuable groundwater is not depleted. Using these sources is acceptable only to the extent strictly necessary to prevent destruction of the biotope during extreme drought or prolonged periods of low rainfall.
Natural Rain Lakes
Liner-free rain lakes are suitable in mountain areas, in places with low-permeability soil, and in locations where drainage works were carried out and re-wetting is needed. They are also suitable in places with permanent or occasional surface springs, at drainage outlets and rainwater downspouts collecting water from roofs and paved surfaces, as well as in areas with a high groundwater table.
With liner-free rain lakes, fluctuations in the water level should be expected. The level changes depending on the season, the related amount of rainfall, evaporation from the lake, and infiltration into the surrounding soil.
Semi-natural Rain Lakes
Semi-natural rain lakes are lakes whose deep section is impermeable. They may have reinforced vertical walls, which enlarge the swimming area. The shallow parts are insulated with natural material, clay, so they may remain partially permeable.
The impermeable deep zone ensures that the water level in the lake does not fall below the required height. The shallow zone serves to capture the largest possible volume of rainwater, which then remains there until it evaporates or infiltrates into the surrounding ground.
